A fantastic article by my friend Steve Clark of New School Selling.

The world is full of pessimists…I choose to limit my exposure to people with negative outlooks. I know I have invested to much time with them if I feel my energy leeching away and and I want to do a exit spin. Your life can be whatever you design it to be. Design a masterpiece with you as the painter.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is fair, whatever is pure, whatever is acceptable, whatever is commendable, if there is anything of excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy-keep thinking about these things. Philippians 4:8

You Have a Choice

Is your glass half full or is it half empty? Are you optimistic and hopeful about the future or are you fearful and full or doom and gloom?

If you believe the news media the world is going to hell in a hand basket. Not true. Yes things are difficult but we have been here before. In the late 70’s and early 80’s there was double digit interest rates, unemployment and runaway inflation but personal income, as adjusted for inflation is up 20% since the 1960s.

Why All the Pessimism?

In order to understand what is going on you have to take a really hard look at who the purveyors of negativity are and then drill down to understand their agenda. Without a doubt the purveyors of negativity are the media – both electronic and print. The volume of their message and the size of their audience make it easy for them to influence, persuade and downright “brainwash” the uneducated, intellectually lazy, mass of humanity.

When one drills down on the stories that appear on the nightly news and the front pages of morning newspapers there is an unmistakable trend and it is all negative. Why the negative you might ask.

Good question.

The simple answer is that negative news sells newspapers and network airtime. And newspapers and networks make their money from advertising. The more viewers or readers the more the cost of the advertising space. The media knows all too well that the best way to drawn a crowd is to promote negative by showing natural disasters of epic proportion, gruesome murders, rapes, kidnappings, celebrity misfortunes, etc.

Politicians of all stripes know, just as well, that when people are stirred up and fearful they are more easily manipulated and controlled. For an example of this, I refer you to the hysteria surrounding TARP 1 and the ensuing rush to action by Congress. Paulson and Bush succeeded in hoodwinking Congress that 700 billion dollars needed to be given to the banks immediately even though there was no plan or accountability in place about how they would spend it. The politicians got out politicked.

Promoting fear allows politicians to capitalize by promoting themselves as some sort of hero with a magic solution to a multitude of societal ills – can you say Obama. It is the oldest psychological trick in the book and yet people still fall for it. All of this is very carefully controlled and orchestrated. If you think otherwise you are indeed naïve.

You can choose fear or you can choose hope.

Warren Buffett chooses hope.

“Fear is very contagious. You can get fearful in 5 minutes, but you don’t get confident in 5 minutes.” – Warren Buffett said on CNBC, Monday, March 9, 2009

CNBC: “We’ve been getting thousands and thousands of emails from our viewers. Warren, we’d like to start with one that echoes a theme we heard again and again. This one comes from Terry in San Antonio, Texas, who asks, ‘Will everything be all right?'”

BUFFETT: “Everything will be all right. We do have the greatest economic machine that man has ever created. We started with 4 million people back in 1790 and look where we’ve come. And it wasn’t because we were smarter than other people. It wasn’t because our land was more fertile or we had more minerals or our climate was more favorable. We had a system that worked. It unleashed the human potential. It didn’t work every year. We had 6 ‘panics’ in the 19th century. In the 20th century we had the Great Depression, World Wars, all kinds of things. But we have a system – largely free market, rule of law, equality of opportunity – all of those things that cause the potential of humans to get unleashed. And we’re far from done. Your kids will live better than mine. Your grandchildren will live better than your kids. There’s no question about that. But the machine gets gummed up from time to time. If you take the bulk of those centuries, probably 15 years were bad years. But we go forward.”

Buffett spoke with Becky Quick of CNBC for 3-hours. Instead of focusing on the affirming, positive statements (such as the one above) the editors and directors of CNBC choose to go with, “Warren Buffett Says ‘The Economy Fell Off a Cliff.” Why?

There is an old saying in the newspaper business that says, “If it bleeds it leads”. Now you know why.

Wishing you all the success you have the guts to grab!

Sales Training Tip: Choose What You Allow Into Your Mind Carefully

A front page headline on USA TODAY read:

90% of the ocean’s edible species may be gone by 2048, study finds
Having Hurricane Irene and the worry over the coming of the 2nd recession isn’t enough. They have to devote half their front page to scaring us about the potential scarcity of Mrs. Paul’s fish sticks thirty- seven years from now.

Since I will most likely be dead none of this really matters to me. I find the reading of the daily paper taking less and less time – no more than the drinking of one cup of coffee. The reason – most of what is in there is of no interest to me and has no bearing on the achievement of my goals. Some may say this selfish and I would plead guilty but successfully guilty.

These headlines and stories are nothing new. My first recollection of this type stuff was The Population Bomb, a best-selling book, written by Paul R. Ehrlich and his wife, Anne Ehrlich, in 1968. It warned of the mass starvation of humans in the 1970s and 1980s. Didn’t happen. And then we had Y2K and the whole idea that all there would be a technological meltdown. Didn’t happen.

Scientists, psychics, cult leaders, politicians and ignorant, irresponsible journalists have frequently predicted the end of life as we know it – starvation and famine, flood, asteroid attack, the earth veering from its axis, killer bees, or – the latest – mad cow disease, etc. – and they have all been wrong.

God knows how many times one religious group or another has declared that the end of the world was near. So far nothing, nada has happened. Now we have the fruitcakes who are saying that the ancient Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world in 2012 – that is if the sunspots don’t get us first. Geez, you would think the public would wise up to this journalistic hype and realize that that all this does is sell newspapers and books and get government money for wacky research.

Eventually something, maybe an asteroid will get us and those left will say, “see I told you so”.

I council my sales training clients to be wise and not pay attention to any of this hype and clog their brain with this useless dribble. If you are really, really smart, you will be ruthless about NOT paying attention to anything that doesn’t advance you toward your goals, enhance your important skills, or inspire and motivate you to be your best self and achieve your greatest ambitions.

Hobbies don’t count and you get a pass because everyone needs escape from the nose to the grindstone relentless toil that it takes to become rich and achieve total personal autonomy to do what you want, when you want, with whom you want.

Anything that does not achieve this goal has to be filtered out. Blocked. Ignored. Just because USA TODAY feels compelled to fill its front page with silly, decidedly unscientific drivel, with scary stuff about the future-without-fish, does NOT mean you must swallow it.

Wishing you all the success you have the guts to grab!

Does Confusion Stop Progress?

empower network

Thanks to my friends Tom and Pam Wolf for Today’s Tip.

There’s an old story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.

One day there was an important job to be done, and Everybody was sure Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job.

Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Of coarse it could happen to anyone...just don’t let it be you!

Live with passion and purpose,

Two way mirrors, Behind the two-way mirror

Two way mirrors, Behind the two-way mirror—magnetbox (Flickr.com)

Two way mirror INFORMATION FOR WOMEN

I was staying in a in a hotel a few weeks ago and there was this large mirror positioned in front of the commode that was so creepy I could not stand going into the room. The hair on the back of my neck stood up and I asked for a room change….then I get this from my good friend. So FYI….

A Mirror or a 2 Way Glass

How can you tell when you are in a room, restroom, motel etc. witha mirror or a 2-way glass?

Here’s how: I thought it was quite interesting! And I know in about 30 seconds you’re going to do what I did and find

the nearest mirror.  Do you know how to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not?

A policewoman who travels all over the US and gives seminars and techniques for business women passed this on.

When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms,

etc., how many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary

mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way

mirror (I.e., they can see you, but you can’t see them)?

There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors

in female changing rooms. It is very difficult to positively identify

the surface by looking at it.

So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type

of mirror we are looking at?

TWO WAY GLASS IMAGE MIRROR IMAGE
Just conduct this simple test: Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective

surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail,

then it is GENUINE mirror. However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the

image of your nail, then BEWARE! IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR!

“No Space, Leave the Place” So remember, every time you see a mirror, do the

“fingernail test.” It doesn’t cost you anything.

REMEMBER. No Space, Leave the Place:

Ladies: Share this with your girlfriends, sisters, daughters, etc.

Men: Share this with your wives, daughters, daughters-in-law, mothers,

girlfriends and/or friends.

I love Craigslist

I love Craigslist—Global X (Flickr.com)

  Craigslist More Than you Imagined?

I am a craigslist intermediate visitor…after reading about Joe…I may be stalking the  freebee section. Watch this video to see if a stalker may be lurking inside of you.

In a major change of pace from his work in The Hangover, actor and comedian Zach Galifianakis is working as the executive producer for a new documentary called Craigslist Joe. The movie is about Joe Garner, who traveled across America living off Craigslist ads.

Over 31 days, Garner sought transportation, food, and shelter through ads on the online classifieds network. All he took with him on the journey was a laptop, cell phone, toothbrush, and the clothes he wore. Get a first look at the movie with the trailer above. The movie is slated to hit theaters and iTunes on August 2.

Craigslist has been at the center of many weird and wacky stories. Strange things wind up for sale on the network, from a 1/3-size scale model of a Star Wars TIE Fighter to a human skull. Although you can search directly for something you need, browsing the Best of Craigslist can also just yield some laughs.

Google Analytics

Secrets To Employ About Google Analytics

I had no idea how to use this or even why I would want to employ Google Analytics then I discovered this…

5 Little Known Facts About Google Analytics

Google Analytics (GA) has popularized analytics for folks who hardly know what analytics really are. No longer the domain of deeply technological vendor specialists, analytics can now be implemented by anyone who signs up for a GA account.

For some, it’s really that simple. If you have a small site and need to know the basics, you hardly need anyone to do anything for you at all (from an implementation standpoint). GA gives you a tracking parameter where you add your domain name and you plop this into the header of your page and suddenly, you are part of the grand analytics experiment.

Where mainstream vendors send you expensive proposals, complicated account teams, service level agreements, caveats and contracts, GA sends you the tracking code. And this has proved almost a siren call to many marketers looking (justifiably) to break free of Big Vendor handcuffs.

The problem is, some people don’t know how much GA can actually do. But even learning a few little-known facts and limitations about GA may help dispel the notion that it’s a set-it-and-forget-it kind of tool. The follow items refer specifically to Google Analytics’ free offering, not its more heavyweight GA Premium offering. Many items can be found in Brian Clifton’s book Advanced Metrics with Google Analytics.

1. Google Analytics Ignores Data After a Certain Activity Level is Reached.

After 500 hits during a single visitor session, further activity is ignored. “Hits” is an old-fashioned word that no one wants to think about anymore, but servers deal with nearly everything on a “hit” level, even if analysts think it’s not useful to reference this as a parameter. A hit is generated any time any item is requested from the web server — a tracking code, a GIF file, a PDF, a page element, an interactive module. And depending on how your site is built, getting to 500 hits might not be so far a barrier to bash into. And then the activity is ignored. It’s not counted.

2. It Samples Data After a Certain Activity Level is Reached.

After you reach 1 million unique dimension combinations, GA samples the data. In somewhat plainer language, this means that once you have that many variables in play — and they do stack up fairly rapidly — GA selectively and intelligently ignores some of the data. It deploys sophisticated algorithms that make quick work of understanding overall patterns and dropping out the data least likely to result in a visible difference.

It’s the same principle universal image compression files (like JPG) use today — what you can’t see anyway will never be missed. Again, that is the driving principle. But when acute detail is needed, or where samples are very large and where algorithms may stray very far from true north, then sampling is not so great. It’s certainly something to be aware of if you are running GA on a heavily trafficked site.

3. It Calls Key Performance Indicators “Goals” Allows 20 Per Profile.

This won’t affect smaller implementations, and there are workarounds to minimize the effect it may have on even larger ones. But for very large, multiplex implementations, 20 KPIs per profile may seem puny compared to the nearly limitless ones you can set up in the pay-for tools. Remember that KPIs may be any valuable action you define — from time spent on page, to content downloaded, to transactions, to completing a registration. The list is about as infinite as the amount of clicks on all the sites in all the world.

Again, this issue can be managed and mitigated and for many it will never be a problem. But enterprises beware: You are probably going to need more than 20 defined KPIs and the free GA tool does not allow it.  Read More….

Marketing On The Internet?

Marketing on the internet, Massive Change in Internet Marketing

Marketing on the internet, Massive Change in Internet Marketing—Maria Reyes-McDavis (Flickr.com)

Are You Already Marketing On The Internet?

I have been marketing on the internet for 2 years and it has been an amazing journey of confusion, struggle, disappointment,  and enlightenment.

Take a moment to think about how you would really answer this question. If given enough thought just about any business owner who utilizes the Internet for any purpose will likely find that whether or not they intentionally organized an Internet marketing campaign, they may already be marketing their products and services on the Internet. This article will examine some subtle ways business owners may already be marketing their business on the Internet.

Do you have a website for your business? Business owners who answer yes to this question are already marketing their products or services online just by virtue of the fact that they have a website online. Having a live website means there is the potential for curious Internet users to access your website. You may not be actively promoting your website but you may still find that your website generates interest in your products despite the lack of promotional endeavors; this is a form of passive marketing.

Do you participate in message boards and include a link to your website in your signature? Again business owners who answer yes to this question are already marketing their website online. Savvy business owners realize the importance of participation in industry related message boards to create an interest in their products and services, establish themselves as knowledgeable about the industry and offer a link to their own website even if it is in the signature line of their posts. However, even business owners who do not realize this may already be inadvertently enjoying the benefits of Internet marketing which result from message board participation just by doing something they enjoy and may be doing as a form of leisure activity.

Do you include keywords which are relevant to your business in the content of your website? Business owners who answer yes to this question are also already marketing on the Internet by optimizing their website for these keywords.

These search engine optimization (SEO) affects the websites whether or not they were even aware of the concept of keyword density and how it can help to SEO a website. Business owners will likely use certain words often depending on the type of products and services they offer just because it is natural and logical to do so. This tendency, however, can result in search engines boosting your website rankings for these particular keywords. The concept of SEO is much more involved and complex than simply using keywords frequently but business owners can gain some benefit just by naturally applying relevant keywords to their website.

Do you solicit feedback from your customers online? This is yet another example of how business owners may be accidentally marketing their business on the Internet. Most business owners realize the importance of soliciting feedback from customers for business purposes and business owners who offer products online might solicit feedback in the form of online surveys. Although the business owners may be doing this simply for a business purpose the fact that it is done online makes it fall into the category of Internet marketing.

We have already discussed several ways in which business owners may already be marketing online but what about business owners who want to have an increased online presence? Business owners who may already be marketing online accidentally may wish to launch a full scale Internet marketing campaign. The best way to do this is to hire a consultant with experience in Internet marketing to assist you in creating a campaign which is effective for your target audience. Or Learn to do it yourself with the help of the best marketers online today.

So if you determine that marketing on the internet is your next ticket to freedom….You want to check this out!

Video blogging

Video blogging—loiclemeur (Flickr.com)

Video Blogging The Pros and Cons

Video blogging has a lot of advantages over text-based blogging, and it is little wonder that this new technology is catching on all over the globe. Video blogs very effectively grab the attention of web surfers, and people are much more likely to become excited about the dynamic content of a video blog than they are likely to find a written posting very thrilling. The more enthusiastic viewers are about a site, the quicker the word of mouth spreads, and the more traffic the site will get.

Of course, there are plenty of disadvantages to video blogging as well. Hosting a v-blog requires quite a bit of server space, which can make it difficult to get started. It takes more time to process and upload a video file than it does to dash off a quick bit of text, which means that running and updating a video blog can be quite a bit of work.

In addition, web surfers sometimes grow frustrated with the slow loading times of the files on many video blogs. Whether you opt for a video blog or not depends on what kind of subject matter you want to cover, and how much time you can devote to video blogging. Before you decide to pursue a video blog, consider if there is an easier way for you to get your message across.
